14 Jan: Mhararano Mbira Academy to launch at Dartington
ZIMBABWE COMES TO DEVON
A unique partnership between Chartwell Dutiro, the Zimbabwean master mbira player, singer, composer, ethnomusicologist and teacher, and ‘Space’, the new multi-disciplinary centre for the arts at Dartington Hall is providing some very special opportunities for local people as a prelude to the opening of ‘Mhararano’, the UK’s first ever Mbira Academy.
On Monday February 14th at 8 p.m. Chartwell will take listeners of Soundart Radio 102.5 FM on the first of a weekly hour-long musical journey looking at the influence of African music on other musical genres from around the world. ‘African Diasporas’ will look at traditional African instruments and music, as well as folk, classical, jazz, blues, rock, reggae and more. It promises to be a fascinating broadcast and is not to be missed.
There will also be small number of ‘Voices of the Ancestors’ workshops where Chartwell will team up with the talented choreographer and dance teacher Denise Rowe, giving the local community a chance to participate in Zimbabwean mbira playing, singing and Pan-African dance.
There will also be Dartington Community Singing workshops called Building Bridges Project singing Zimbabwean and English traditional songs with Chartwell and Yvette Staelens.
